Narrative:
The University is in partial compliance with Comprehensive
Standard 3.2.13.
There is no currently existing contract or agreement between the
university and the the Double T Association.
Six organizations fit the description of “institution-related
foundation not controlled by the institution”. These are:
Texas Tech Alumni Association
Museum of Texas Tech University Association
Ranching Heritage Association
Texas Tech Association of Parents
Texas Tech University Law School Foundation
Double T Association
All of these organizations are 501(c)(3) qualifying and exist for
the primary purpose of facilitating the operation of the
university or one of its auxiliary operations and raising
funds for the particular area with which they are
affiliated. Texas state law requires that bylaws of these
organizations and any agreements they may have with the
university be kept on file in the Office of Institutional
Advancement of the TTU System.
The Texas Tech Alumni Association
(formerly Texas Tech Ex-Students Association) functions as a
clearing house for a wide range of alumni activities that
range from class reunions and other social events to
promoting Texas Tech University athletic and academic
endeavors. All students who have enrolled for courses at
Texas Tech University or who have received an advanced or
honorary degree are considered members of the Alumni
Association. Anyone who pays the minimum dues is considered
to be an active member and receives the alumni magazine.
Those who pay less than the minimum dues are associate
members and do not receive the magazine. Honorary members
may be elected by the board of directors. According to the
agreement between the university and the Texas Tech Alumni
Association in March 2004, the university agreed to
underwrite partial costs of utilities and custodial service
for the Association buildings on the TTU campus. The
university also agreed to provide $110,000 to the
Association “to be utilized for operations”.
The Museum of Texas Tech University Association
promotes and supports the Museum of Texas Tech University.
The offices of the Association are located in the Museum
building on the Texas Tech University Campus. The Museum
Association publishes the Museum Journal and a newsletter.
It organizes tours to other museums for special exhibits and
also schedules a variety of educational events in the
museum facilities and manages the museum shop. The
Museum Association collects funds to support museum
operations and activities and also solicits gifts of art and
artifacts to be housed in the museum collections. Texas Tech
University provides office space and janitorial service for
the Museum Association on the second floor of the Texas Tech
Museum, but has no financial obligation to the association.
The Ranching Heritage Association
supports the National Ranching Heritage Center by
developing, interpreting and maintaining interest in
ranching history and obtaining funds for the restoration and
preservation of ranch architecture, furnishings, operational
equipment, and other items associated with ranching. The RHA
assists with the operation of Cogdell's General Store (the
NRHC gift shop) and also organizes the ranch host activities
at the NRHC. The director of the National Ranching Heritage
Center serves as director of the Ranching Heritage
Association, and the association uses Texas Tech University
facilities for meetings, but the university has no financial
liability with the association.
Texas Tech Association of Parents
is established to provide a formal means of contact between
student parents and other care givers/responsible parties
and the university. The Parents Association sponsors annual
awards to faculty for teaching, research, and leadership and
contributes to student scholarship funds and other academic
areas that benefit the university and its constituent units.
The Texas Tech Parents Association liaison is the Parent
Relations Department in the Office of Student Affairs. The
university has no financial liability with the Texas Tech
Parents Association.
Texas Tech University Law School Foundation
is formed to promote the teaching, research, and
professional service activities of the Texas Tech University
Law School. The Foundation will assist in providing to the
students and faculty of the Law School assets to accomplish
its goals and objectives. The Foundation seeks to perform
those functions which the university cannot provide itself.
In turn, the university assists the Foundation by providing
certain clerical support, record keeping services, and other
administrative services as requested. The university has no
financial liability with the Texas Tech University Law
School Foundation.
The Double T Association (formerly the Texas Tech Lettermen’s
Association) has a membership limited to individuals who
earned a letter in Texas Tech University intercollegiate
athletics or who played for at least one year on a varsity
team sponsored by the Department of Athletics. The
Association holds its annual meeting during Homecoming week.
The association funds athletic scholarships and other
activities of the Department of Athletics, including
affiliated independent organizations such as the Fellowship
of Christian Athletes. The Double T Association has no
formal agreement with the university, but it is pursuing the
creation of such a document with university administrators.
The Athletic Department provides a web site and minor
organizational support for the Double T Association but has
no financial liability with the organization.
Action Plan
The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will negotiate a
formal agreement with the Double T Association that defines
the relationship between the association and the university.
This agreement will spell out in detail any financial
liability the university may have with the association.
