  Narrative:

Texas Tech University is in compliance with Federal Requirement 4.2.

Texas Tech University offers (2003) 116 bachelors degrees, 103 master’s degrees, and 61 doctoral degrees. All baccalaureate degrees require satisfactory completion of at least 120 hours of course work (computed on the basis of an average of 15 hours completed per semester over a 4-year period, or 8 semesters).

The university maintains a core curriculum that is required of all undergraduate students (see the 2004-2005 university catalog http://www.depts.ttu.edu/officialpublications/catalog/AcademicsCore.html). This core includes oral and written communication, mathematics and logic, natural (laboratory) science, technology and applied science, humanities, visual and performing arts, and social and behavioral sciences (including state mandated courses in United States and Texas history and government). This core complies with the legislatively mandated set of minimum common core requirements that are transferable among Texas state-supported institutions of higher education (see the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board policies on transferability of core curriculum courses at http://www.thecb.state.tx.us/ctc/ip/core11_00/index.htm).

The specific curricula for individual degrees are determined by the faculty in the department and program for which the degree is awarded. Requirements vary according to the nature of the program and the level of instruction (i.e., baccalaureate, master’s, doctoral), but all programs are approved by the dean of the respective college, by the Office of the Provost, and ultimately, by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board before a degree may be offered. In many cases, degree programs also must meet the standards of national accrediting agencies, as well. These controls insure that curricula are directly related and appropriate to the goals of the institution and the diplomas, certificates or degrees awarded. Curricula for the individual programs in the university are all published in the university catalog at http://www.depts.ttu.edu/officialpublications/catalog.html (see sections on individual colleges).
